Carolina
Nonentity’s birthplace: a front yard sweeps
its dirt clean. Devil hopped up the oak tree,
devil-take-the-profit seized
a jay in the twigs by the feet, wings buffeting
this child’s cheeks to rhyme. Leaf of gift
box tissue folded over her pocket comb. Hind
pocket kazoo. Won’t somebody please start
something other & oddball soon,
narrow her down out of folly
& trivia to destiny? But Whynot the tortie cat
flopped an irregular sunny patch,
wriggles & rolls & revives the blissy fits of ignorance.
Decades crunch as minor upcountry thunder. My nod
to Mastermind’s robot rabbit, said to dwell in his top
hat, who tips me a silk evening. Gloaming again & never
far from home. Listen you hoots: alas for me, for my love
with the gallant and grifter soul has tucked
into just the crevice he feared. Fear told
& tells him the truth, so he trusts it. Listen
you hollers, whatever you had in mind for me.

The title of this poem is Carolina and that is what the poem depicts a home in the Carolina's. The author uses cacophonic words and personification. The author uses cacophonic words to describe the speakers attitude toward the central event by using words that explain that the speaker isn't having the best time. For example like crunch, crevice, buffeting, and grifter. These words aren't happy words that depict a happy time. The author is as well able to show the attitude of this place from using personification. For example, "hat, who tips me a silk evening" and "wriggles & rolls & revives the blissy fits of ignorance."

The author uses phrases like "devil hopped up the oak tree" to present the culture of the area she lives in. Zweig also uses imagery like "wriggles & rolls & revives the blissy fits of ignorance" to critique the cultural aspects of Carolina.
ReplyDeleteIn this poem the author uses line breaks to show the overall meaning of the poem. The line breaks represent the break in the speaker's mixed emotions. The speaker is unhappy with her environment as shown in this statement "Nonentity's birthplace." She feels as though nothing important comes from the place she was born. Although she feels the place she comes from is meaningless, she still trys to find the good in it.
